De-hyping the new line of handhelds
Today, lots and lots of news came out about a new Playstation portable, but let’s start with the 3DS. You could take the 3D off it and offer it at the same price and I might be more excited. Like every other way that Nintendo has innovated their hardware, it doesn’t get utilized by anyone other than Nintendo. Sure, we are going to see Picross 3D… IN 3D by Nintendo! But expect nothing but ports from our major developers. We might see some fancier things come out, but in the end, developers are going to put whatever games they want on the system. It means instant recognition because its on the new system, especially at or around launch.
Do you think that we might get some new game play mechanics because of the 3D? Will we be able to tilt our head and look underneath a box to find something we could not see before? Nope. You have to keep your head firmly in place at a 90 degree angle directly in front of the screen. Move your head anywhere else and the 3D is gone and your eyes will unfocus. When you look back, your eyes will have to refocus just to see the image again. Stupid!
Think about it. You’ll be tilting your handheld left and right but you still have to keep your head at a perpendicular angle to the screen in order to see the 3D.

Whoops! Guess, I’ll turn off this 3D! (or I wonder if Madcatz is working on a neck brace/3DS holder?)
I get that the thing is going to be a more powerful and have plenty more features… Super! Who cares? It’s the same reason I don’t like the new PSP.
News today and yesterday details everything about it. Well, as you can imagine not everything, like the price (hehe Sony). Ok, it is a beast. Literally. It can eat meat. It’s going to have to be a beast in order to power itself with all the technology it’s packing. 3g Wireless (need a carrier? or… is that 3G gonna be free Sony?), two analog sticks, bigger screen, cameras on the front and back, and touch pads on the front and back. What the hell are you going to do with a touch pad on the back?!? If I see you massaging your PSP2 on the front and back, I am going to replace your PSP2 with my dick.
The thing is going to cost a million dollars with that stuff on it. And if you don’t get it, then you are going to miss out on your favorite Sony brand games. Love the Uncharted series dearly, and don’t ever want to miss another adventure for Nathan Drake? Too bad. Another Uncharted game is being made for the PSP, so if you want to see what happens to your favorite character then you’ll have to buy one. Whoops again!
Sony execs must have short term memories. Six years ago, the first Playstation Portable had a similar unveiling. The portable had muscles galore over the competition, trying to ride the promise of console style games on a small screen. But the idea failed. And now PSP is barely propped up by the sales of less than a handful of good games. And most sales are happening in Japan.
Handhelds have changed since the Gameboy, Sony. You’ve made a portable PS3 “lite” that’ll cost as much as a PS3 (I’m predicting more than a PS3) during a time that not everyone owns a PS3 in the first place.
I can’t perceive how AAA developers are going to support this. How about you put your money into developing for the fans that you already have? Work on doing something awesome for the PS3 instead of going for the quick buck cash in of a new hardware launch that supports no one but Sony’s wallet lining.
The 3D screen of the 3DS and the super Gizmondo features of the new Playstation portable are driving up their prices. We do not need everything on showcase here and no amount of buzzwords you spit out will change that for anyone besides those with absolute liquid money. This will not be an easy ride because the tech is better. You still have to compete with Apple and you still have to produce games people will want to play in small chunks on a small screen. I’ll reenter the portables market when they are cheaper than my home systems. Thank you very much.
Consider how much you’re willing to drop on a portable gaming device that will likely be your second to the already portable device if you already have a good phone.
